Cradle of Filth: Metal Survival!

Cradle of Filth: Metal Survival!

Along with detailing the inspiration behind “Godspeed in the Devil’s Thunder”, this article and interview details the band’s transitions to stay strong in an ever-changing genre and their feelings about it.

Check it out below…

Who can rock the Cradle?

Dark fairy tale tinged with brutality and bloodlust

By Stuart Derdeyn, The Province

For the past 18 years, British black-metal band Cradle of Filth has proved itself able to survive the scene's often brutal changes in taste.

In fact, the quartet is one of the few acts in its genre to sign to a major rock indie, Roadrunner Records, which makes it label mates with Nickelback. While this may seem odd company, increasing fame for CDs such as “Nymphetamine” and “Thornography” explains the buzz for the band's new concept song cycle, “Godspeed on the Devil's Thunder”.

Inspired by the nasty tale of Middle Age Christian soldier and über sicko Gilles de Rais, the disc is nothing less than a dark fairy tale.

All the way down to twisted Little Red Riding Hood imagery that's pretty gross considering the horrible things de Rais did to many, many children.

"We'd been looking into the Blood Countess, Elizabeth Bathory for our album Cruelty of the Beast in 1998, and you know how it goes," says Filth (a.k.a. Daniel Lloyd Davey). "One serial killer turns up another, particularly when they are so similarly aristocratic, rich, celebrated and ultimately very evil."

Gilles de Rais was a nobleman who actually rode at the side of Joan of Arc in the war against England, achieving the rank of Grand Marshal of France. But after her death, he descended into total playboy living, succumbing to the enticements of alchemists, sorcerers and such, trying to regain a squandered birthright. Somewhere in this descent, he bought the farm and became a serial killer. Total family fare.

"We aren't saying that and I wouldn't have my daughter in a role reading a nursery rhyme and laughing if we'd gone fully into his atrocities. Instead, we cover his life like a kind of fairy tale gone so terribly wrong."

Par for the course for a group known for its outrageous gothic stage sets, leather and demonic contact lenses as much as for its pummeling onslaught of progressive black metal. Nowhere is this more obvious than on the new CD, which contains as many classic rock hooks, vintage keyboards and backing choruses as it does the act's signature amplified howl. Filth is found speak/singing and actually descending into melody rather than the angry Muppet moans the style is filled with.

The band has taken some flak for this transition and expansion of its sound, too. He doesn't care.

"We've survived this long by keeping our heads into our work and ignoring what goes on in the scene, so why start worrying about it now?

"When you are that dedicated to your craft, things go in your favour and, as we're entering middle age now, I'm 35, and we've mastered how to do a lot of things right when it comes to touring, maintaining our energy levels and putting on great concerts whether it's in clubs or the big summer festivals."

For the local show, there will be an actor performing alongside Filth to tell the album story. The set design is "a pretty nice scary dungeon torture chamber affair." So what is his home decorating like?

"I was a very normal boy, quite straight and got my homework done. Pretty regular. At some time I just embraced this idea of gothic drama and content and here we are. I got to PTA."

Devildriver Drummer: 'This Record Is Our Most Technical To Date'

Devildriver Drummer: 'This Record Is Our Most Technical To Date'

Santa Barbara, California's Devildriver, the group fronted by former Coal Chamber singer Dez Fafara, recently entered Edge of the Earth studios in Los Angeles to begin recording the band's as-yet untitled fourth album with producer Logan Mader (Five Finger Death Punch, Gojira, Divine Heresy).

Commented drummer John Boecklin: "This record is our most technical to date. It is certainly pushing the boundary of what one may call a Devildriver record. It has the vocal deliverance that is very catchy and a little more along the lines of the 'The Fury of Our Maker's Hand' [2005] record, yet blows it away at the same time. Musically we are sounding more progressive at times, as well as more straight forward than ever at times. We absolutely captured all the levels of what we are about on this one. Logan Mader has taken us where we needed to go on a production level. We finally feel like we have a unique guitar tone on this one. Something that always bugged me about our records. Can't wait for people to get a listen."

Devildriver recently re-signed with Roadrunner Records after previously issuing three full-length albums through the label. In addition, the band has secured a new management company in the shape of Davis Entertainment Group.

Commented Roadrunner Senior VP of A&R Monte Conner: "I am thrilled to welcome Devildriver back to the Roadrunner family. Dez Fafara and Roadrunner have quite a history together and we are happy to be going back into the trenches with him yet again. I'm extremely proud of Devildriver 's steady ascent over the course of their first three Roadrunner albums. They continue to evolve and grow with each new record, and I know this next album will be the best thing Devildriver have ever made."

Stated Fafara: "I'm proud to say that Devildriver has resigned with Roadrunner Records worldwide. My friend and A&R rep Monte Conner and the entire staff have been like family to me since 1996 and I am looking forward to many, more years of working together and putting out music."

Devildriver's last album, 2007's "The Last Kind Words", has sold around 70,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen Soundscan.

That CD shifted a little more than 14,000 copies during its first week of release to debut at No. 48 on The Billboard 200 chart. This figure represented around a 40 percent increase over the opening-week number of 2005's "The Fury of Our Maker's Hand", which premiered at No. 177 with sales of 10,400.

Slipknot Percussionist Shawn “Clown” Crahan: 'I Have A Ph.D. In Rock And Roll'

Slipknot Percussionist Shawn “Clown” Crahan: 'I Have A Ph.D. In Rock And Roll'

Adam Graham of The Detroit News recently conducted an interview with Slipknot percussionist Shawn "Clown" Crahan. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

On the road again:

"One thing I've learned in this business is No. 1, I tour. That's what I do. Records are great, videos are great, interviews are great, all that stuff is great. But the biggest extension of your art is to be able to share it with the world, and I've always believed that world domination means you're willing to get out of your house in Des Moines, Iowa, and take your disease, your pain, your art as far as... Russia. Slipknot just played Russia. We've been doing this 10 years, and we'd never been to Russia. We had just under 12,000 people show. That's when the reality behind your art really comes true.”

Falling backward into metal:

"I'm not really even a metalhead. That doesn't mean I don't like it, it just means I come from a whole different scene and a whole different way of thinking. I was going to go to college. I wanted to teach art history. I wanted to paint and do photography and pottery. I'm kind of a Renaissance guy; I've got my hand in a little bit of everything. When painting isn't working, I move to photography. When photography's not working, I'm writing songs. When songs aren't working, I'm writing some poetry or some short stories."

Hands-on learner:

"The last 10 years has been nothing but an honor and a learning experience. I tell people every day who want to point their finger at us that I have a Ph.D. in rock and roll. You know what I mean? I've got 10 years under my belt of constant touring. I can tell you about the stage. I can tell you about the semis. I can tell you about per diem. I can tell you about recording. I can tell you about lyrics. I can tell you about art, photography, video, from film to HD to mini DV. The list goes on and on and on and on and on, with what we've had to fill our minds with. From winning Grammys, to winning best video, to people going crazy to our music, from lawsuits, to deaths to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. You name it."

The Aquarian weekly interview Slipknot’s Clown!

The Aquarian weekly interview Slipknot’s Clown!

The Aquarian weekly’s Cathy A. Campagna has posted an interview with Shawn Crahan of Slipknot. There is a lot of great stuff here and some excellent questions.

This is an interview Slipknot fans NEED to check out.

"Under the magnifying glass, any art form can be considered an essence, or even indelible fingerprint left behind by the soul of its creator. Upon speaking to M. Shwan Crahan or Clown of Slipknot you'll find that the percussionist completely embodies that principle. He is unpredictable, unapologetic, cerebral, raw and maintains a fervent course. Those qualities are at the core of Slipknot's fourth release, All Hope Is Gone." –Aquarian

Heavy metal a scapegoat again? Dani Filth discusses…

Heavy metal a scapegoat again? Dani Filth discusses…

Cradle of Filth vocalist Dani Filth was interviewed recently by Canadian newspaper The Vancouver Sun in anticipation of the bands upcoming show there.

Discussion however turned to took a turn for the unexpected when the journalist highlighted a murder case in te region from back in 2006 where a 23 year old and his 12 year old 'girlfriend' killed the girls family, stabbing them all to death. Both apparently were avid fans of the band and made repeat references to them online. It was a case that Dani was unaware of, but commented on nontheless.

"We've got quite a lot of fans, fortunately. You can't be responsible for each and every one of them. . . . You can't tell if someone living next door to you is a powder keg waiting to blow (no matter) what music they're into. I mean, you get gang killings and shootings and rape and murder associated with hardcore rap as well, don't you?" He continues "I know that most (of our) fans are intelligent, well-to-do people. They have their day jobs. They're accountants, lawyers."

“People can find blame in anything," says Filth. "Oh, they have songs with a bit of violence and a dark side so that must be the immediate problem. . . (Heavy metal) is an easy target. . . . It's a very easy scapegoat. . . . You may as well blame testosterone.”
