Soulfly – Omen artwork available + Marc Rizzo talks about the album!

Soulfly – Omen artwork available + Marc Rizzo talks about the album!

Julia Neuman of Metal Assault conducted an interview with Soulfly guitarist Marc Rizzo on March 20, 2010 at Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio.

A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Metal Assault: [Soulfly's new album] "Omen" is scheduled for release on May 25. What really stands out about this album for you?

Marc: It's right to the point. There's a real hardcore, punk vibe to the record. Short tunes. This record is kind of different for us and I think the fans are going to like it a lot.

Metal Assault: Which album are you most proud of to date and why?

Marc: The Cavalera Conspiracy record is really special to me because I was such a big fan of Max and Igor [Cavalera, former Sepultura and current Cavalera Conspiracy drummer] when they were in Sepultura. For them to ask me to be a part of that record was really exciting. I think we put out a great record that will stand the test of time.

Soulfly’s Max Cavalera video interview in Sacramento

Soulfly’s Max Cavalera video interview in Sacramento!

Capital Chaos conducted an interview with Max Cavalera (Soulfly, Cavalera Conspiracy, ex-Sepultura) when Soulfly performed at The Boardwalk in Orangevale, California on October 3, 2009. During the chat, which can be viewed below, Max addresses criticism from Blabbermouth.net users regarding his dreadlocks (watch around the 3:50 mark in the clip below).

As previously reported, Max can now be reached via TheLiveLine, a service launched by Megadeth mainman Dave Mustaine that enables musicians to connect to their audience over the phone. Get updates on Max and leave messages for him by calling (888) 716-5450.

Regarding the songwriting process for the next Soulfly album, Max said in a recent interview, "I am working on new songs with Marc [Rizzo, guitar], a little bit. We're thinking about making the songs a little shorter, so if you can imagine maybe a little bit like Minor Threat mixed with [Slayer's] 'Reign In Blood' mixed with Soulfly, with still some world music, but much smaller, and the songs not so long — shorter. It'll be more aggressive than [last year's] 'Conquer' [album] even, because it'll be shorter — it'll be like when Slayer did 'Reign In Blood', [that] kind of thing. I don't know why some interviewers talked to me and said that they thought that the album was gonna be less aggressive, more like [2000's] 'Primitive', which I don't know where it came from, because I never said that. In fact, I just started working on the album on this tour, so it's only been a month. But this is the official news right now — it's gonna be more aggressive, faster, shorter."

Soulfly to enter the studio later this year!

Soulfly to enter the studio later this year!

In a recent interview with U.K.'s Rock Sound magazine, Soulfly mainman Max Cavalera revealed that the band has already began preparation for the next studio album which he stated "will not be as intense as [2008's] 'Conquer' but not as poppy as [2000's] 'Primitive'either; somewhere half way between the two."

Writing on Soulfly's official message board, the band's bassist Bobby Burns confirmed that "we'll more than likely record a new record sometime towards the end of [2009], but it won't hit the streets until next year."

As previously reported, the two B-sides from Soulfly's "Conquer" recording sessions at the Porch Studio in Orlando, Florida have been made available for streaming at the band's MySpace Page. The songs "Mypath" and a cover of Bad Brains' "Sailin' On" are available for purchase on the special-edition release of "Conquer" (CD/DVD or digital).

"Conquer" sold around 8,400 copies in the Unted States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 66 on The Billboard 200 chart. This number is in line with the opening tally of the CD's predecessor, "Dark Ages", which shifted a little more than 8,000 copies during its first week of release in October 2005 to enter the chart at No. 155.
