Killswitch Engage and Devildriver: Track-by-track!

Metal Hammer posted an interesting article about the new Killswitch Engage and Devildriver album. Check out some of “the track-by-track” previews below…
Killswitch Enagage:
“Starting Over”
Killswitch here sound like a cross between Iron Maiden and Atreyu with a galloping almost party vibe. Howard’s voice rips up the growl over the fast-paced backing track, before the signature chorus/clean vocal hits. A stripped bass/drum break hit the mix before the tempo and layers build again. Howard’s voice is always faultless, but the pleading heartfelt energy of his clean vocals seem somehow lessened than earlier outings. The track still signals a certain forward-thinking approach to song structure, rhythm and pace – and it works.
“Light In A Darkened World”
After the mid-tempo “The Return” comes another banger, again, moving quickly to a soaring chorus. This is more straight-forward KSE territory, but the song is good and some nice guitar-work make it an anthemic juggernaught.

Devildriver:
“Back With A Vengeance”
Opening with a huge wah-lead lead guitar line, this is arguably the track where DevilDriver truly nail groove-metal like never before. “Back With A Vengeance” might even be destined to be DevilDriver’s “Redneck”. The chorus is absolutely huge and recalls vintage White Zombie, the solo rips and this is one is destined to become huge in the clubs.
“Waiting For November”
Slamming drums over the top of a swirling, crushing riff. One of the most relentless tracks on the record, double-bass drums thud like a motherfucker all of the way through the track and there’s a mammoth beat-down at the track’s climax; the kind yo’ momma warned you about.

Port Amoral pop up and say hi!
New boys Port Amoral have updated their official Myspace blog with news pf what life has been like for them in the past couple of years and and what they have coming up in the not too distant future.
Hatty posts: The last two years have been kind of a whirlwind, with lots of ups and downs. We’re all really jacked up that Roadrunner finally signed on to be a part of the PA team. Everyday is a day closer to the release of our debut album “Villains.” In the next few months things will be happening really quick. We are currently having Travis Smith (art guru and sex god behind many of your favorite bands art works) working on the art for the album. A new MySpace with brand spanking new photos will be accompanied by a couple new tracks (and hopefully a sexy album trailer) off the upcoming debut will be up in the next couple months…

Megadeth bassist checks in from Denmark!
Megadeth bassist James Lomenzo has issued the following update from the "Priest Feast" tour, also featuring Judas Priest and Testament:
"The 'Priest Feast' has been better then expected. There's been great back stage camaraderie between the bands and their crews, it's a great thing to be part of. Everybody's working together to make the best possible show for you all who are coming down."
"The crowds that have been attending have really got me stoked. The energy's been electric (eye). Yesterday at sound check in Gothenburg , I was called to the stage by one of our crew, ...'JLo, report to the stage...' As I walked around to the back, I passed by Chuck (two first names) Billy [Testament] who remarked, 'Did someone just call you JLo?' He seemed amused and indicated that my crew might be acting just a bit insubordinate. I shrugged and said, 'No, that's what they call me.' 'Called me it back in Brooklyn too, way before there was a big butted Latina with the same acronym.' He kind of shook his head like, 'I don't know...' So, I reminded him of the few choice items from his past that he (or was it some one else?) divulged in his dressing room the other night... I won't reveal any of it here 'cause like you, I like the big, bad-ass Chuck Billy persona just as he is now. Besides, who needs to get on his bad side?”
"Anyway, great show in Gothenburg. It was fantastic to see Mikkey Dee (Motorhead, King Diamond) and some of the King Diamond clan back stage. Most of us went out out to a local bar afterwards and had a grand time. All in all, a real 'metal' event.”
"Here in Denmark (we got in around 8 AM), we continue our quest to complete the new album. We set up in Dave's [Mustaine] room again and knocked out some guitar solos and embellishments for two of the songs. Things are taking shape at a comfortable pace and we're all really stocked with what we're coming up with.”
"So, it's gettin' to the wee hours here and there's more metal ahead of us. Looking forward to the show in Horsens, Denmark. I don't think I've ever played here before so it will be great to see my Danish friends tear it up here."
On January 7, Megadeth commenced the recording process for its twelfth studio album at the band's own Vic's Garage studio in San Marcos, California. The CD is once again being helmed by acclaimed British producer Andy "Undie" Sneap, who produced Megadeth's last album, "United Abominations" (May 2007, Roadrunner Records).
Tentatively due later this year via Roadrunner Records, Megadeth's forthcoming LP will be the group's first with guitarist Chris Broderick, who replaced Glen Drover at the end of 2007.

Megadeth: Dave Mustaine reveals another song title!
Megadeth mainman Dave Mustaine has issued the following update from the "Priest Feast" tour, also featuring Judas Priest and Testament:
"Today I was able to talk with Mike Gitter [A&R executive] from Roadrunner Records, who has graciously allowed me to make this [new Megadeth] record and to let me do it without some of the ridiculous things that he was ordered to tell me, and I think we are going to have a really good record.”
"Lemme see, I sent him the music for Track 2, and he said, 'This just got my dick hard,' which suggests success. I am really excited about the lyrics and the title that I have chosen for this penultimate offering to Roadrunner.”
"We are playing tonight in Dortmund, Germany, after a day of go-carting, an evening of Mongolian bar-b-que, and all around socializing with band and crew over the last two days off. I usually do this in the first week or so of every tour to let every one know what I am looking for, what I expect, what I will tolerate, and what I won't.”
"We have a first-rate tour again, and although we have already had one casualty, we have replaced and resumed the race at the pace that only Megadeth and its world-famous crew could achieve.”
"Of course, that is skipping the fact that I crashed my kart yesterday at approximately 25-30 kmh and the hard bucket seat cut up along my body to contour me shape and aerodynamically keep the kart as unaffected by the wind or 'drag,' as it is called. As the three nano-seconds expired from the first impact and my body caroming into the wall with the edge of the seat cutting into my heavy jacket, and making contact against the delicate rib area directly under my arm, about where my elbow hangs.”
"My initial grunt barely muffled the clear distinct cracking sound of my rib breaking, and the electrical signal that my body felt was excruciating, but nothing as bad as the mental anguish I have put myself through since, every time I think about getting hurt out here. I am always so careful, and if I wasn't so stinking competitive, I wouldn't feel like a used heavy bag right now.”
"We are doing great with the progress of finishing the writing of the new record out here. I have chosen a working title and I think that it is going to stick, and the record starts out with an instrumental that is very much like 'Into The Lungs Of Hell', and there are ten more songs that are really fantastic. The is one song on here that will probably touch a lot of people; 'The Hardest Part Of Letting Go'."
STV's John Kilbride conducted an interview with Dave Mustaine shortly before Megadeth took to the stage at Glasgow's SECC arena on February 16, 2009 as part of the "Priest Feast" tour with Judas Priest and Testament.
Regarding Megadeth new song "1,320", the first title to be confirmed from the band's forthcoming album, Mustaine said, "It's a song about drag racing. A quarter-mile track in America is 1,320 feet long. On our web site right now everyone is asking, 'What the hell is 1320?' It's a measure of distance from the start to the finish line."
He continued, "I like adrenaline. I used to skydive, I've been into martial arts since I was 12 and there is something about adrenaline that makes me excited. I went to drag racing event one time and they had these nitro funny cars and I was hooked."
According to Dave, the new Megadeth album will be worth the wait. "It is supposed to be released in September," he said. "I think it's a very exciting record.”
"Shawn [Drover, drums] has been a fan forever, James [Lomenzo, bass] has been with me now for several years and Chris [Broderick, guitar] is a guitar virtuoso so when they say they are excited about it, it is really saying something."

Devildriver: New interview with Dez!
Spiritech of Australia's PyroMusic.net recently conducted an interview with vocalist Dez Fafara of Santa Barbara, California's Devildriver. An excerpt from the chat follows below.
PyroMusic.net: You've recently revealed that the title [of the new Devildriver album] will be "Pray For Villains". What's the meaning behind this one?
Dez Fafara: There's a song on the record called "Pray For Villains", and the chorus is, "They pray for villains when their heroes let them down." And it's pretty self-explanatory, you know? A lot of times we put our heroes in a mess and they can't do a damn thing, and all of a sudden someone comes along who you think is the bad guy or the villain, and he saves the day. So that's what that's about.
PyroMusic.net: Interesting. How does the new material compare to your previous albums — heavier? More melodic? Faster? More guitar solos?
Dez Fafara: Way, way, way more guitar work, way more solos, the drumming has stepped up, the bass is so heavy it shouldn't even be allowed! (laughs) It's so heavy. Vocally, I'm doing a lot of different things, I broke out of the box. I think the band as a whole has just been growing from the first record until "The Last Kind Words" and now, we've stepped it up a notch in order to define who we are and define our sound and also not get trapped into the same place. We're never going to make the same record twice and I think that's the one thing that stands out about this record, it's just definitely something different from Devildriver.
PyroMusic.net: From interviews I've read that seems to be somewhat of a band mantra, to never make the same album twice.
Dez Fafara: I think so. I think art has to grow. I don't want to be stale and make the same record. I tell people if you're looking for "The Fury Of Our Maker's Hand Part II" or "The Last Kind Words Part II", well, you're not going to get it. We continue to grow and define ourselves and as artists, if you don't grow you get stale, and that's not a good place to be in.
PyroMusic.net: You guys have also had some rather cool artwork on your previous albums- have you got the art for "Pray For Villains" finalized yet?
Dez Fafara: Yeah, I've got a bunch of stuff in line right now. I'm working on all the artwork and all the concept stuff right now, I should have it done by the end of this month and it should be really cool. It's going to be something different. The last three records have just featured the cross predominantly on the front cover and this time we're going to break out of that box and give them something else.
PyroMusic.net: The band has been rather prolific throughout your career, having released four albums now in about a six-year period. Is this an important thing for Devildriver to do to keep your name out there?
Dez Fafara: Yeah, well we've been together since 2002, so we've just continued to make music. For us, making fans wait two or three years between records is just ridiculous. So there's no reason why we can't continue to tour as much as we do, and we tour more than most bands in the world. So there's not a reason we can't continue to do that and to write at the same time and keep putting out music.
PyroMusic.net: Do the whole band tend to write much while on the road?
Dez Fafara: Ah, well I know that some people do write on the road, some people write when they get home, I think it's a mixture of both. I tend to write once I get the music in my hands and decide what songs I like and what songs are good for Devildriver and what ones aren't, that's when I start my writing process. My writing process didn't start until December 10 last year, and between December 10th and now I wrote it, demoed the whole thing, all 15 songs and recorded all 15 songs. So I've been working hard.
PyroMusic.net: Devildriver are renowned for having a wide variety of different metal influences in their music. Is there anything that you've written through your own process where you've thought, "this isn't right for Devildriver," or it a case of anything goes?
Dez Fafara: Well, no it's not anything goes at all. It's totally the opposite actually. I don't mind breaking out of the box and stretching our artistic wings, but I know what Devildriver is and I know what Devildriver isn't. There's so many influences in this band... often times I don't get brought music from the players because they know, this is absolutely not for Devildriver — it'd be great for another band but not for Devildriver. So there are those walls and those boundaries that we don't cross, but I don't want us also to be afraid to jump out of the box and do different things and this record is really about, us stretching our wings now and really, really beginning to... when you hear the record you'll understand what I'm saying.
