Cradle of Filth frontman talks 'A Black Metal Bible'!

Cradle of Filth frontman talks 'A Black Metal Bible'!

Mr. Drew of the horror-centric web site BloodyGoodHorror.com recently conducted an interview with vocalist Dani "Filth" Davey of British extreme metallers Cradle of Filth about "The Gospel of Filth: A Black Metal Bible", the new book written by Dani and music journalist Gavin Baddeley.

"The Gospel of Filth: A Black Metal Bible" serves both as a chronology of the band and their influences, as well as a complete study of the occult and man's obsession with it throughout history. Each chapter is filled with parallels between the occult and themes found in horror, heavy metal, black metal, comic books, literature, and just about every other facet of popular culture. Many luminaries in each field are showcased or interviewed. I recently had the opportunity to talk to Dani concerning the book, and his career as a whole.

A couple of excerpts from BloodyGoodHorror.com's interview with Dani Filth follow below.

BloodyGoodHorror.com: How did it feel to finally finish "Gospel of Filth" so many years after its inception? Did you feel it was complete?

Dani: It was on the cusp of massive relief even up to a few days ago when it finally managed to claw its way down to the printers! One of the main problems we had to face was the fact that each chapter adopts a Cradle album as its initial springboard (so, for example, the chapter entitled "Cruelty and The Beast" concerns itself with crime and serial killer chic), so the longer the book was taking, the more chapters were being added to accommodate the next Cradle of Filth excretion. We were writing albums quicker than chapters in the book at one laborious stage! That said though, the book is a literal tome. Serving as a modern day black grimoire, it covers all areas of the dark-side and the occult and infuses this with accounts from real life practitioners, be they musicians, actors, writers, historians, serial killers or real-life vampires, the grisly facts are always expertly corroborated and then fleshed out.

BloodyGoodHorror.com: Did Gavin approach you, or did you seek him out to help assemble all the pieces?

Dani: You know it's over five years ago now, down the long, winding road of painstaking research and too much absinthe, that, if memory serves me well, Gavin and I actually met at a very fruity Black Mass in Chelsea, London.

BloodyGoodHorror.com: You have a clear fascination and understanding of the occult and all the other subjects compiled in the book. But "Gospel of Filth" also had a kind of tongue-in-cheek view of the subject matter. Is occult study a simple curiosity for you, or is it something you regard very seriously?

Dani: I used to be very serious about the occult, sitting on the other side of the fence to the one I scratch my arse on now. As I've hit my thirties and now bedecked with family, I find myself exploring everything in life a little more vividly and with so much on one's (often busy and bloodstained) hands, there just isn't the time to indulge fully in the daily labors of magic and mind-play. I see myself as more of a Van Helsing-type character now, an obsessed vampiric good guy with inside information on the dark. Possibly with a cape. Haven't decided.

BloodyGoodHorror.com: There is a panoply of impressive accounts and interviews from celebrities, musicians, horror icons, and cultural authorities from all walks of life. Dario Argento, James Hetfield, Nick Holmes, Tom Araya, and countless others. How did these people come to be involved in the project? Did you go to them, did they come to you, or both?

Dani: A bit of both. For example, we have excerpts from possibly the last ever interview with Anton La Vey, which is something that Gavin undertook a few years back naturally, and in contrast with that, the Dario Argento interview came into existence due to me having sung the credit song on his recent "Mother Of Tears" movie.

BloodyGoodHorror.com: You've mentioned in the past that horror films occasionally serve as inspiration for Cradle of Filth. What films stick out in your memory, and which are your favorites? Have you seen any recently that pique your interest?

Dani: Don't get me started! I don't really have an absolute favourite and there are just so many thousands I like. In fact that's my touring bad habit... buying DVDs, especially in the States on a day-off Best Buy and Wal-Mart run, to while away the lonely nights on the bus. Recent favorites however would have to be films like "Antichrist", "Martyrs", "District 9", "Pandorum", "Dead Snow", "Monsters Versus Aliens", "Coraline", "Dorian Gray", "Meatball Machine" and "Mum And Dad".

BloodyGoodHorror.com: You were in the horror film "Cradle of Fear" in 2001, and then were a voice actor in 2003's "Dominator", but haven't appeared since. You've said in prior interviews that you very much enjoyed acting. Have you closed the door on that part of your career, or can horror fans expect to see you again?

Dani: I was acting?!!!! We were actually due to undertake a sequel to "Cradle Of Fear", but seeing as the cast and crew all were on deferred payments until the film made money (to keep the outlaying costs low), and now that it's been done like that once it won't happen again and hefty investors have been a tad shy of late. I'd love to do something again, but it'd have to be done right. I've got some great ideas for scripts and the suchlike, however the band and subsequent career have kept me pinned to the wall for the past few years.

Cradle of Filth: Dani Filth’s “The Gospel Of Filth” - More Details Revealed!

Cradle of Filth: Dani Filth’s “The Gospel Of Filth” - More Details Revealed!

For decades, music writers have been penning tell-all artist biographies and their personal interpretation of rock history. But on Halloween 2009, Fab Press will unleash a book that takes readers on a much deeper and darker journey into the inspirations behind the world of rock music.

Entitled "The Gospel Of Filth", this coffee-table-sized volume is an all encompassing compendium of all things dark and taboo, written by renowned music journalist Gavin Baddeley ("Dissecting Marilyn Manson", "Lucifer Rising") and Dani Filth, the outspoken vocalist of British shock rock band Cradle of Filth.

The history of Cradle of Filth is but the linchpin that ties the expansiveness of "The Gospel Of Filth" together. With over 500 pages of content, the book reveals the unspoken and debaucherous dark side of humanity as it relates to culture, media, literature, art, film and music. It unearths the mysteries behind our insatiable fascination with vampires, werewolves, serial killers, and the occult, tracing the traditions of depravity — from folklore to pop culture.

Says Baddeley of the work, "The Gospel Of Filth must be the most ambitious project I've ever undertaken. Exploring every aspect of Cradle of Filth was just the first step in a journey which takes us to the furthest reaches of the dark side. The result is, I believe a definitive gothic guidebook, an unholy text of truly biblical proportions!"

"The Gospel Of Filth" includes interviews with all members of Cradle of Filth, past and present, offering their own personal takes on the world of the macabre. In addition, it contains edifying narratives from many of today’s dark music ringleaders, including H.I.M., Type O Negative, Within Temptation, Paradise Lost, Slayer, Gorgoroth, Behemoth, and many others.

Not limiting itself to the world of music, the book features expansive discussions of dark art, poetry, and other things uttered in hushed tones, accentuated with exclusive interviews with English historian Peter Ackroyd, filmmaker Dario Argento, photographer/author Sir Simon Marsden, and artist JK Potter. If that weren’t enough, "The Gospel of Filth" is textured with rich, decadent testimonials by Guy de Maupassant, Anton LaVey, Stephen King, Marianne Faithfull, HP Lovecraft, Aleister Crowley, and other cultural luminaries.

Filth elucidates on the immensity of this labor of blackened love, "This book is the result of five years of painstaking research and investigation into the far-flung corners of the occult, the realms of literal darkness and all things fun, fearful and macabre. From scream queens to fever dreams and everything in between, this black grimoire uncovers the secrets and history of the esoteric and forbidden and is an absolute must for any lost soul curious about the darker side of life — be it a craving for vampirism, witchcraft, horror movies, serial killers, femme fatales, illicit fiction, exotic sex and drugs, black masses, or gothic fairytales. Making Halloween last all year or just a passing interest in the musical macabre, this book stands like a roadmap to Hell and beyond."

"The Gospel of Filth" is a reference book, a pop culture retrospective, a literary guide, and a biography all wrapped into one all-encompassing tome with content that spans nearly all of recorded history.

The first pressing of the book is a signed and numbered, leather-bound, hardcover volume featuring a bonus chapter written entirely by Filth and is only available online at www.thegospeloffilth.com.

It will be followed by hardcover and trade paperback editions with different cover art. The hardcover edition will also be limited to online availability, and the paperback (which does not contain the bonus chapter) will be sold in retailers worldwide.

Cradle of Filth: Footage from Bloodstock Missile Dodging, Onstage Announcement Available!

Cradle of Filth: Footage from Bloodstock Missile Dodging, Onstage Announcement Available!

Video footage of vocalist Dani Filth dodging a missile thrown from the crowd during Cradle of Filth's August 15, 2009 performance at the Bloodstock Open Air festival in Derbyshire, England and the subsequent onstage announcement regarding the band's abbreviated set at the event can be viewed below.

Cradle of Filth was forced to cut its set short at the Bloodstock Open Air festival after guitarist Paul Allender was hit by an object thrown by a member of the audience, resulting in Paul being unable to finish the performance and requiring medical attention.

The band has issued the following statement regarding the incident:

Cradle of Filth would just like to apologise to all Cradle of Filth fans at Bloodstock for not being able to perform the full length of set on Saturday. This was due to a selfish and stupid person in the crowd throwing dangerous objects at the band and injuring Paul, who then had to be hospitalised.”

"This person threw what were being sold at the site as 'gobstoppers,' but which were actually heavy, solid, pieces of candy, approximately the size of a cricket ball and weighing close to a pound, at the band. Approximately six of these were thrown, one narrowly missed hitting Ashley in the face and also a terminally ill young fan in a wheelchair sitting side of the stage, a couple just missed Dani [Filth, vocals] and then one hit Paul in the spine, causing him to collapse. The paramedics called an ambulance and Paul was taken to hospital with suspected spinal damage; where he was subjected to numerous tests before the doctors said they didn’t think Paul had sustained any lasting damage."

"This act of stupidity caused the show to finish prior to the encore, caused Paul serious pain and everyone else a lot of anxiety. This person is lucky that no one was seriously injured or worse, which could easily have been the case and a serious police matter."

“Why does someone buy a ticket for a festival where everyone should be enjoying the weekend and having a good time and then have to ruin it for other people? A very selfish, sad person, one can only imagine.”

“So again, full apologies to everyone who was at Bloodstock to have a good time and to see the band and if you think you know who the person was that spoiled everyone else’s evening, please let us, the Bloodstock staff or the police know as soon as possible, because next time someone may not be so lucky.”

Dani Filth had this to say about the event: “No one could be more disappointed than I about the ridiculous and callous incident that happened on Saturday night. Bloodstock is an event that we have long endorsed and looked forward to headlining due to its united European metal vibe, its growing popularity and of course, it being one of the better festivals held on English soil.”

“The crowd, as expected, were great and we were playing well with an arsenal of songs yet to deliver, when the stupidity started. I actually thought one of the balls thrown was an apple and was going to head-butt it as it flew past my head and on toward Ashley, then luckily thought twice about it. The missiles were the size of cricket balls but solid and almost a pound in weight. Enough to kill a person at that speed, according to a medic who attended Paul behind stage.”

"Of all the years I have spent touring the world, nothing comes even close to this for downright sheer stupidity. My ten-year-old daughter Luna was also standing side of stage when the missiles came and although, thank the stars, she was unhurt, the incident indelibly left her frightened and more than a little shook up. This is NOT the reason I brought her along to witness a metal festival and this is certainly NOT the image I want her to take away from Bloodstock or indeed any other metal festival for that matter. I hope the perpetrator(s) are really proud of themselves (sic)."

"So again, I apologise to all our fans who were awaiting our encore and can only hope that this selfish bastard who TRIED to ruin the night for everyone is caught and sorted out."

“Hail CRADLE! Hail Bloodstock! Hail metal unity!”

Cradle of Filth’s Dani blogs...

Cradle of Filth’s Dani blogs

Apologising "for the lateness and irregularity of [his] correspondence", Cradle of Filth’s Dani Filth has updated the blog on the bands Official MySpace page with an update about the bands escapades in Australia recently. Pretty colorful it would seem...

"A few funny events included Martin in a Borat lime green Mankini, running around the hotel at five in the morning, having been reported to the staff for being a flasher and the promoter waking up the next morning to discover his shoes solidified in the freezer..."

Dani also touches upon the an incident in Adelaid when he was taken ill, sending his apologies foe the "shortened, slightly instrumental set...".

You can read the full, rather humerous blog at:

Cradle of Filth: Dani Fitlh walks off stage in Adelaide!

According to a posting on the Metal As Fuck web site, vocalist Dani Filth of British extreme metallers Cradle of Filth abruptly exited the stage halfway through the song "Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids" when the band played in Adelaide, Australia on Sunday, May 24, leaving the rest of the group to play on without him.

Filth's unexpected, and sudden departure terminated the show early — less than an hour after the concert began. The gig ended without a word said — and no comment from anyone.

Low-quality fan-filmed video footage of the "Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids" performance from Sunday night can be viewed below:

Cradle of Filth to co-headline Bloodstock!

Cradle of Filth have been confirmed as co-headliners at this years Bloodstock festival, which will take place 14th-16th August at Catton Hall, Walton on Trent, Derbyshire.

The line-up also includes label mates Satyricon as well as many others whom the Cradle of Filth guys cannot wait to play with:

Cradle of Filth, metal forged from the hot friction of wanking nuns, are very much looking forward to headlining the Bloodstock heavy metal festival this Summer, especially knowing and loving most of the other bands playing on the bill over the three day weekend. But obviously not in a gay way. Carcass, Kreator, Moonspell, Arch Enemy, The Haunted, Apocalyptica, Satyricon, Enslaved, Saxon, Gwar, Candlemas, Turisas... this line-up alone places this up-and-coming British festival right up there with its sometimes-a-pain-in-the-arse-hard-to-reach European rivals. So hail to England! Hail to Bloodstock! This is a proper metal festival for proper festive metallers. No shoddy haircut screamo pap allowed~! FOAD!"

Cradle Of Filth: Ear Blasting Metal!

Cradle Of Filth: Ear Blasting Metal!

Suffering from a ruptured ear drum and on the very day of his surgery, Dani still managed to conduct this phone interview with NJ’s The Aquarian!

Here few parts of it…

It was on a return flight to the U.S. to pick back up on their current tour when Cradle Of Filth frontman, Dani Filth, says he knew there was a problem with his ear. The excruciating pain clearly indicated something was wrong and sure enough he had ruptured his eardrum. In true metal fashion, Dani does not plan on taking any time off to recover. In fact, he did this very interview you’re about to read, the day of his surgery.

One of England’s finest metal descendants is currently touring the States in support of their eighth studio album, Godspeed On The Devil’s Thunder, released last fall on Roadrunner. The album’s concept was inspired by a 15th century mass murderer. How much more fucking metal can you get? I mean really.

The Aquarian: So tell me what’s new and exciting with you and Cradle Of Filth.

Dani: Well what’s new and exciting is that we’re out on this tour and I have a burst eardrum. We had five days off and we had a show get cancelled in Finland, it’s a long story. I went overnight back to England because it was my daughter’s birthday. On the way back on the plane, something went funny with my ear and I had to have an operation this afternoon. They had to cut into the actual eardrum because it was all pressurized.

The Aquarian: There has always been debate over the specific genre of music you guys fall into—black metal, death metal, heavy metal, goth metal, etc. The list goes on and on. Do you really even want to be labeled?

Dani: Labeling bands is just a thing for stacking records in shops. The biggest compliment that we can be paid would be just to be recognized solely as Cradle Of Filth, much as Iron Maiden is solely recognized as Iron Maiden.

Cradle of Filth: Dani Filth’s dark side…

Cradle of Filth: Dani Filth’s dark side…

Christopher Porter of Washington Post Express recently conducted an interview with vocalist Dani "Filth" Davey of British extreme metallers Cradle of Filth. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Washington Post Express: Have you always been interested in the dark side?

Filth: I grew up in an area — well, I still live in the area known as the Witch County — but I used to live in old village, and one of the old houses we used to live in was where Damien in "The Omen", which they put on every Thursday, and it just progressed from there on in. But I was a normal teenager: smoking, drinking, womanizing. But I managed to keep a healthy balance between being a naughty boy and getting my math work done.

Washington Post Express: Did you grow up in a religious household?

Filth: No, although my mother tired to get me confirmed, and went to a Church of England school, and got christened, etc. But religion wasn't a big thing; my parents were down to earth. My grandma is a very devout Christian, but she kind of has this blind spot when it comes to us. We can't do anything wrong, despite obvious flaws like the "Jesus Is A Cunt" shirt. I'm sure she heard of it; she's not stupid. She's all-seeing, my grandmother.

Washington Post Express: Are you religious in any way?

Filth: I take bits from all kinds of things. I've been out to India a lot of times, and I've seen a lot of things, and practiced a lot of things. I take tidbits from everything; a composite religion, really. Each to their own beliefs. I don't adhere to any one belief system. I collect antiquities, so my house is full of religious and demonic kinds of things, like masks, voodoo stuff, Egyptian artifacts, Hindu artists, statues of Kali, busts of Nefertiti, and people like that. A bit of everything.

Washington Post Express: Tell me about your forthcoming book.

Filth: "The Gospel of Filth" is more of a foray into the darkside. It's about horror movies, childhood nightmares, esoteric England, Satanism, witchcraft, femme fatales. And it's all corroborated and substantiated — verified almost, validated. There are contributions of hundreds of different people, like [horror film director] Dario Argento, Clive Barker, Doug Bradley, [horror actress] Ingrid Pitt, Christopher Lee, Ville Valo [HIM], Tom Araya [Slayer], Marilyn Manson, Charlie Manson, [serial killer] Richard Ramirez.
