Trivium – Matt Heafy checks in with Decibel on “God of War”!

Trivium – Matt Heafy checks in with Decibel on “God of War”!

Decibel Magazine has gotten insight from each of our bands featued on the exclusive 6-song EP for God of War 3 entitled God Of War: Blood and Metal, and rounding out the series is Trivium frontman Matt Heafy letting Deciblog readers know where "Shattering The Skies Above" came from.

Writes Heafy, "The original idea came from our bassist, Paolo, who had the verse riff for the song kicking around for a long time and every now and then he would play it in the dressing room or at rehearsals. We knew the riff was cool, we just needed an opportunity to put it to use; so when we were approached by the God of War people, we knew we had the seed of a song idea that we could use to write a song to for the game."

Continues Heafy, "We wanted to keep it new because we have a new drummer (Nick Augusto) in the band and it was a good opportunity to see what we could collectively come up with now that there was a different approach to our drumming. And Nick’s drumming and intensity in the rehearsal room lit a fire under our asses that feels like we haven't had in ages. So we started with just the riff and began jamming the riff as a group at rehearsals, sound checks, dressing rooms, etc. until the song pieced together. Once we had the basic song skeleton we kept revising, adding, and improving it as a group until we knew the song was ready. This was a bit of a different process for us because previously most of our material was written separately and then pieced together in rehearsals. Here, we wrote the song together as a group from the ground up."

As for the recording, Heafy explains, "We then rehearsed the song repeatedly until it could basically play itself and to test it we recorded it at sound check. The next step was recording drums in a local Orlando studio. Once the drums were fully tracked, we then recorded the rhythm guitars, bass, melodies, leads, and vocals all on a portable Pro Tools rig in the spare office of my loft. Who says you need a real studio? We tracked vocals in an open closet that was covered in blankets, rugs, and anything else we could find to deaden the sound a bit. It was a very down-home, back-to-basics way of recording but we loved it. At one point a neighbor below me didn't love Corey’s vocals, screaming “Shut the fuck up!” at hour 10 of a long day of tracking...it was only 8 p.m. mind you."

In conclusion, Heafy confesses, "We feel that “Shattering” is a great snapshot of where we are as a band at the moment. But we’re always trying to evolve so you’ll have to tune into the next record when we have it to see where we’re going."

Trivium – Matt Heafy interview!

Trivium – Matt Heafy interview!

In a wide-ranging discussion about the lyrics on all four Trivium studio albums, Heafy tells White Noise Metal’s “That BS Dude” Brian Shields he wants fans to know what he’s thinking about the world.

Here’s just a part of the interview:

From the band’s start with “Ember to Inferno”, Heafy says Trivium has been very clear about where it wants to go.

Every record we’ve had, the album titles have been directly reflective of what we’ve had going on as a band at that time,Heafy adds. “The idea was to go from that nothingness to something special. We didn’t know when or how or if but we knew we wanted it. It was our goal. That’s what the song was about. It was about creating that vision of ourselves and to really go for it.

New interview with Corey Beaulieu!

New interview with Corey Beaulieu!

Musicianstop Magazine's Sahra Joelle conducted an interview with guitarist Corey Beaulieu of Florida metallers Trivium when the band played the Majestic Theatre in Ventura, California on October 2, 2009. Watch the eight-minute chat below.

In a recent interview with The Daily Rock, Trivium guitarist/vocalist Matt Heafy stated about the songwriting process for the band's next album, "Yeah, we have some stuff — not as a whole band, but each individual guy has maybe ten to twenty songs. I have done about fifteen, but I have gotten rid of all but six because I kept the good ones as I kept going on, the newer songs I was writing were stronger and better so I got rid of the ones that weren't as good. Paolo [Gregoletto, bass] has a bunch of songs, like twenty or so, but he keeps cutting back as well. Everyone keeps writing as many as they can, but then cutting back the weak ones and not worrying about trying to make them better songs. . . We have all loose ideas right now. Musically, it is getting closer to finishing a more realized idea but lyrically and generally, with the entire record not being written and purely in the developmental stages, we are thinking of it as something that we want to be recognized by any kind of fan, whether you like metal or not, whether you speak English or not, 'cause we are definitely a band that travels internationally around. I have done a style of words that is almost hard to interpret even if you speak English, so I'm not saying we are dumbing ourselves down, but I want it to be universally translatable no matter where we are. I don't know how to make that happen, but we definitely want it to sound like Trivium but with the best possible songs. We always try to keep true to what our heart is as a band but we want to diversify, and not diversify for the sake of ourselves, but to find where we are going as a band. Nowadays, we know more of what is right for our sound. If we look across all four records, we know what kind of parts should be there for the next thing and what shouldn't be there."

Trivium has announced that they are one of the first major acts to team up with entrepreneurial Australian company Posse in the U.K. Posse is a peer-to-peer ticketing method that rewards fans for actively promoting concerts. The partnership enables fans to recommend and sell tickets for Trivium gigs in the U.K. via their personal blogs, websites, or social networking profiles. Trivium is thrilled to chart new territory by aligning with Posse for the majority of their March 2010 U.K. tour giving fans the opportunity to help make a difference as well as getting something back.

Trivium: Metal Hammer interview - “‘Why do you suck?’, that’s not a fucking good question!”

Trivium: Metal Hammer interview - “‘Why do you suck?’, that’s not a fucking good question!”

Metal Hammer interviewed Matt and Paolo from Trivium for a Spanish Inquisition and even after the interview done they kept talking…here’s some part of what they said:

Metal Hammer: Thanks guys, that was great.

Matt: “That was fun. I want more jerks. I like the hate shit, I wish there was more.”

Paolo: “We should do a thing where it’s only people who hate us can send in questions, so we can answer them. Like the dicks who write in, ‘Why do you suck?’, that’s not a fucking good question.”

Matt: “I bet anyone that says ‘why do you suck’ would suck at guitar. People can hate our music, but they can’t hate us because we’re good people who believe in being good to each other. They can’t say we suck at our instruments because we’re probably better than them, unless you’re Dragonforce, who’re better than us at guitar.”

Matt: “There was this kid back home who I helped out. He made tribute CD for a Disney cartoon. A fucking Disney cartoon. I recorded it for $10 a day, back when I had a shitty digital 8-track. After that he came to our House of Blues show in Orlando and Paolo pretended like he wasn’t in the band and this kid was mouthing off like, ‘Matt Heafy’s dad bought him a studio, that’s why they’re signed now’. And I saw this kid in our line to buy a CD and get it signed.”

Paolo: “When he saw me he was so embarrassed. All the kids in the queue were like ‘he’s in the fucking band you idiot. He kept apologising.”

Matt: “I did this kid a favour. He made a concept album on a Disney cartoon. I didn’t even laugh man. And he wanted to make up all those rumours and shit. It’s like, dude, my dad didn’t buy me a studio, I got an $250 8-track for Christmas one year.”

Metal Hammer: You’ll have to start the band’s biography with that story…

Matt [in a fake officious voice]: “Back when Matt’s dad bought him the Roadrunner contract, he made love to pornstars and drove cars through flaming buildings. And that’s why they’re millionaires right now.”

Paulo [laughing]: “They make it sound like Matt’s dad just goes up to the bar and yells, ‘hey, studios are on me!’.”

Matt [laughing]: “You know he paid off Maiden, that’s why they’re bringing us out. I think we should just make up our own rumours from now.”
