Slipknot’s Paul Gary pays tribute to the Astoria!

Slipknot’s Paul Gary pays tribute to the Astoria!

As you may know, London's legendary venue The Astoria has closed pending demolition to make way for the new cross-rail development. It will be mourned by many. This web ed is one of those folks who has had many a killer night watching amazing bands in that venue: Slipknot, Airbourne, Chimaira, Kids In Glass Houses, Machine Head, DragonForce, Killswitch Engage, DevilDriver, Gojira, Nine Inch Nails, HIM, My Chemical Romance... not to mention the miles run up and down the stairs (oh the many many stairs!) backstage ushering journalists, DJ's and band members around. And the staggering up and down them...oh the staggering...post show. It's a venue that was infamous for an amazing vibe and fun times. A venue that many a punter enjoyed going to and that many a band enjoyed, nay aspired to, playing.

Rock Sound spoke to some such artists for a feature on their website recently. Check out what Paul had to say below:

- Slipknot Mourn The Passing Of The London Astoria -

Slipknot bassist Paul Gray has chimed in with his memories of the now defunct London Astoria:

"I can't believe the Astoria is closing down,'' he tells Rock Sound. ''In '99 we played there for the first time and sold it out, so it's always held a very special place in my heart. That was our first time in England, let alone our first overseas tour. I remember the show was fucking awesome and the fans were FUCKING CRAZY! Here's a funny story: I was walking around on the second level without my mask so no one recognized me and Bjork happened to walk by. It took me a couple of seconds to gather up the nerve, but I went up to her and told her I was in Slipknot and gave her an all access pass so she wouldn't have to walk around in the crowd but she did anyway! After the show she came back when we were done and said it was amazing and that it was one of the coolest shows she had seen! We were speechless because it was Bjork standing in front of us! It's a great place and it is a shame that it will no longer be there. We will miss The Astoria greatly!''

Bless this mess - Dave Jaffer

Cradle Of Filth get hands dirty with new album and book, The Gospel of Filth.

Think about this (Wikipedia) statement: "According to Metal Hammer magazine, [Cradle Of Filth] are the most successful British metal band since Iron Maiden." Sounds funny, right? Okay, now really think about it. Not so much funny as it is true, right?

Far too early in the morning in Montreal, I'm speaking with Cradle Of Filth founder Dani Filth, the only member who's been with the band from its inception in the early 1990s until today. We're discussing Cradle's 2009, which will, for a time, revolve around touring new album “Godspeed on the Devil's Thunder”.

"I hope it'll be a good one, but I never like tempting fate," he says wisely. Then again, this is the same guy whose band merch, in the late '90s, included the infamous "I love Satan" shirts Cradle Of Filth members wore to the Vatican, so maybe he's just not tempting it today. Godspeed, the band's eighth LP, is a concept album based on the life and times of Gilles de Rais, onetime brother-in-arms to Joan of Arc and all around bad motherfucker often discussed as the first serial killer.” Says Dani: "It's chronological, not like satellites orbiting a theme. It's a story from start to finish and, because of the nature of the beast, the music on the new album is a little bit more symphonic, and bit more raucous and untamed."

Also, on the heels of film version of The Dirt, Cradle's 2009 also includes a book.

"[It's] at the publisher's at the moment," Dani says. "[It's] called The Gospel of Filth. It's not necessarily based about the band - it uses the band as a springboard to discuss other topics like Gothicism and romanticism and the occult."

Drums completed on the new Megadeth album!

Drums completed on the new Megadeth album!

The Megadeth blog over at their official MySpace has seen another update, this time from Shawn...

“I leave for the airport in a few hours, to which I am happy to have 100% completed these 12 new songs for the next Megadeth record - I am really excited on how they turned out both from a performance and a sonic standpoint, so now I can just spend a few quality weeks at home with my family before we once again head out for the Killing Road.

I am certain that Chris is chomping at the bit to start his tracks, as is both James and Dave. I am sure they will sort out "Who" is next in line to begin their tracks, and I hope they have as much fun as I did. Big kudos to Andy Sneap for calm guidance and tons of laughter during these recording's, and to all who lent a hand in making Vic's Garage what it now is - A very comfortable and beautiful recording facility.

I am outa here, homies. Shawn

Dommin added to Wednesday 13 – West Coast dates!

Dommin added to Wednesday 13 – West Coast dates!

Los Angeles-based goth rock quartet Dommin will replace Son of Sam on the West Coast portion of Wednesday 13's tour in February. Due to commitments with their main bands, some of the members of Son of Sam are no longer available to tour during this time.

The dates are as follows:

Feb. 20 - El Corazon - Seattle, Washington
Feb. 21 - Satyricon - Portland, Oregon
Feb. 22 - Blake’s On Telegraph - Berkeley, California
Feb. 24 - Whisky A Go-Go - Hollywood, California
Feb. 25 - The Sets - Tempe, Arizona
Feb. 27 - Red 7 - Austin, Texas
Feb. 28 - Club Dada - Dallas, Texas

Dommin was discovered by Dirty Icon Productions, a company founded by producers Logan Mader, former guitarist of longtime Roadrunner artist Machine Head, and Lucas Banker.

Led by the enigmatic frontman, guitarist and songwriter Kristofer Dommin, Dommin puts a uniquely refreshing spin on the romantic, dark goth sound, bringing a unified voice to the brokenhearted, conflicted swarm of melancholic music fans who prefer to look at the glass as half-full. Veteran A&R rep Monte Conner signed the band to the label and was quick to express his excitement, saying, "Dommin comes across as very fresh and unique in today's landscape. Kristofer Dommin is their secret weapon. His vocals are absolutely compelling, and this is especially evident live where you can feel the power, passion and emotion of every word he sings."

Dommin's lineup is rounded out by keyboardist Konstantine, bassist Billy James and drummer Cameron.

Dommin’s video for the song "My Heart, Your Hands" can be viewed below:

Dave Mustaine talks about the progress on their new album!

Dave Mustaine talks about the progress on their new album!

Dave Mustaine of Megadeth has posted on the bands officislal site at:
http://www.megadeth.com/home.php

about the progress made on the new album so far...
"We are on the last day or so of drum tracks, and barring the debacle at the top of the session, we have been able to maintain the typical Vic quality with the recording.”

Chris Broderick has been coming down more and more and it really is starting to feel like a band again (sometimes it feels more like a session when we break after a tour and the time lapse, before we feel like we are in stride again).

James [Lomenzo, bass], of course, lives down here and has been working with me daily, and has been relentless in his work on this project and the additional stuff that we have been doing for the last few months.I expect James and Chris to start playing within the next day or so, as well as myself, and I am really excited about going to the NAMM, and after that, there is just the rehearsals and the flights and we are once again... on the Killing Road.

According to a post on Blabbermouth, Dave Mustaine recently told Revolver magazine that Megadeth's upcoming CD will contain:

"...stuff that's melodic like nobody's business, stuff that's heavier than hell, and stuff that's a combination of both...The way I write, I'll play a riff and tape it and save it. And if I don't use it now, I'll use it later. The very first song I ever wrote, 'Rust In Peace… Polaris', didn't appear on anything until the fourth Megadeth record. Right now, there are about 20 songs that are in the making, and there's another good 25-to-30 hours worth of guitar riffs on tape. And I've also got a lot of old lyrics I've assembled over my career. Some of it's relevant to this day and age; some of it is stuff that, if I released it, would probably get me in a lot of trouble. Those songs deal with a lot of the anger that I felt when I was younger and reading things like [the 1971 underground manual for making homemade explosives] 'The Anarchist Cookbook'."

Don't forget that all the current members of the band are blogging at the official Megadeth MySpace on an ongoing basis, so subscribe now!

Megadeth tour with Judas Priest and Testament next month.

Dragonforce’s Fred Leclercq featured at ESP!

Dragonforce’s Fred Leclercq featured at ESP!

He's a man of many talents, Fred LeClercq. Not only does he play a mean bass in Dragonforce, but as this ESP Guitars artist feature highlights, he's also a pretty mean guitarist!! Check below to read the feature...

Artist spotlight: Fred LeClercq of DragonForce:
Some people like to focus on one thing, and that becomes what they are known for. But Frédéric Leclercq of DragonForce took a slightly different route than the usual guy. Not only is he an accomplished bass player, but he’s also a guitarist, keyboardist, and singer as well. Not only does he speak his native French, but is also fluent in English and German (and claims to know the dirty words in most other languages as well).

And, of course, most people are satisfied with being in one band, but in addition to his Grammy-nominated work in DragonForce, Fred is also the frontman in his own metal band, Maladaptive, where he sings and handles guitar duties. Previously, he held down the keyboard duties for French band Heavenly. But in his better-known role as the bassist for English power metal band DragonForce, Frédéric was originally contacted to help the group out only as a live musician on the band’s North America and Japan tours, having been a friend of the band’s guitarist/ producer Herman Li. But things went so well on that tour that in 2006, he was asked to become the permanent bassist for DragonForce, an opportunity he acceptedimmediately.

Being the renaissance man of metal, Fred continues to perform as an in-demand session musician around the world. However, the success of DragonForce is inarguable; in December 2008, the group received a Grammy award nomination in the Best Metal Performance category for "Heroes of Our Time". The band’s latest album, "Ultra Beatdown", sold 24,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 18 on The Billboard 200 chart.

While he may have a variety of music applications for them, Fred’s choice of bass and guitar comes from just one company: ESP. Fred’s played a variety of ESP basses and guitars, including his well-known F-Series bass and custom Eclipse guitars. But no matter what the instrument, this is one guy who knows how to rock.
